Skin Matters: Detecting Early Signs of Melanoma

Summer is definitely here, and there’s no better way to beat the heat than going out and having some beach getaway. But, the heat seems to invite an unwanted guest, Melanoma. Having too much sun exposure might result in a heightened risk of Melanoma. But fear not, summer lovers! We’re here to shed some light on this skin problem, its signs and symptoms, and some ways of prevention, helping you keep yourself safe and protected.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma may be small and unidentifiable at the start, but it is the most serious type of skin cancer. It arises from skin cells called melanocytes, producing pigments that give skin its color. While most skin cancers grow slowly, melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body if left undetected.

Although there’s no exact cause of Melanomas, typically, this type of skin condition starts when overexposed to sunlight. Thus, prevention and having an awareness about your status can significantly reduce the health risk of Melanoma. But how can you know if you’ve acquired Melanoma?

The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Appearance of Melanoma can take different forms other than atypical moles. It can appear as bumps, patches, and open sores on areas such as face, arms, back, and legs. On the other hand, early detection is key in fighting melanoma and achieving a healthier you.

The ABCDE signs of Melanoma is a simple yet effective tool in detecting Melanoma. Here's a handy guide to remember the signs:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole looks different than the other half.
  • Border: The borders or edges of the mole look ragged or blurred.
  • Color:The mole has uneven coloring, with shades of black, brown, gray, or other colors.
  • Diameter:The size of the mole is greater than 4 mm or ¼ inch.
  • Evolving:The mole is changing in size, shape, color, or there's a new mole.
